PIONEER WINERY, CHINA RELOADED
Sometimes it is good to take a break and a deep breath! This is exactly what we and our Chinese partner did for the last 18 months. After 3 years and a steep learning curve we always found great interest for ChangYu wines, BUT we felt the product was not good enough yet!
We therefore went back to the drawing board, worked on our relationship with our friends of ChangYu in order to understand this fascinating country better (for me personally China represents a different but truly exciting culture – we can and should learn from this great people). The result is already exciting and will get even better over the next 18 months!
Launch of “Noble Dragon Pink” 2009. Stuart Pigott already wrote enthusiastically about this wine in his newest book “Wine from far away”: “This wine is a true shock in a positive sense – how can a Rosé taste so close to a Riesling?” He even features this wine on the cover of his book and loves it. This wine represents true value and a true novelty from the sixth largest wine producer in the world (soon the 5th).
Why Pink? Well, the base is white – Italian Riesling and Chardonnay from the Yantai / Shandong region. A few drops of Yantai 73, another authentic Chinese grape does the trick. We have done the blend in January in Yantai (Dr. Li head of wine making ChangYu, Dieter Hübler and Lenz Moser).
2010 is the warm up and finding friends with the Rosé for the “big one” 2011! ChangYu will launch the first organic wine from China!
- Cabernet Gernischt based – China’s indigenous grape.
- From Ningxia – 200 km West of Beijing almost in the desert of Mongolia – 3000 ha of new and virgin plantings owned by ChangYu.
- Certified organic combined with a social project.
- All this coming in Stelvin from China’s oldest, pioneering and best winery.
